There are 3,130 cases of covid-19 in Costa Rica. 37 of them are hospitalized including 3 in intensive care. Authorities now fear the health system could collapse because of the rapid and exponential growth in cases.
The first case was detected 115 days ago. It took 83 days to exceed 1,000 cases but then just 21 days to add another 1,000. Even scarier, another 1,000 were added in just over a week. 2,000 cases have been added in under a month in this second and stronger wave of the pandemic.
The speed of appearance of new cases has been increased by 10 times, according to the manager of the CCSS. It is more important than ever to take care of ourselves to slow the spread.
If we reach a rhythm of 280 daily cases, or 2,000 weekly cases, the hospital scenario would be critical. With these numbers, 74 would need hospitalization including 26 in Intensive Care. In the second week, 52 ICU beds would be needed and in the third week 257 would be needed. The CCSS has only 257 ICU beds and only 24 of them are adapted for covid-19 care. The CCSS is working on adding 32 ICU beds for covid-19 patients, bringing the total to 56 beds.
