An American woman has already gone to trial three times for the murder of her husband and she is being sought out again for a fourth trial. This is against human rights so she is suing Costa Rica for persecution before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
Lawyer Fabio Oconitrillo Tenorio said that the woman, his client, Ann Maxine Patton, moved to the United States after she was acquitted of all wrongdoing. He explained that she had no legal reason to stay in Costa Rica as the issue was closed and she was allowed to move freely.
There are limits to how many times you can be tried for the same offense. The process can not be ongoing infinitely. She was acquitted in the first trial in 2013 but then it was challenged. In the second trial, she was sentenced to 22 years in prison but this was overturned in the third trial.
