Costa Rica News – Customs has retained 5,000 tons of new appliances.
1,760 packages contain freezers, mini-refrigerators, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, fans, blenders, fryers, air conditioners and rice cookers, among others.
They came from the US and had not been declared at the time of import by the customs agent or the importer.
This operation is being carried out by the Directorate of Supervision that fights tax evasion. The merchandise is being evaluated. It seems the amount would exceed the $5,000 required to consider it a crime of customs tax fraud.
It may even be considered aggravated because a customs warehouse in Limón did not unload the container in its facilities, as is required.
Those responsible could be fined four times the amount of taxes due and even go to prison for 15 years.
The retained merchandise will be available to judicial authorities to be investigated.
