Costa Rica Healthcare – We’ve heard so many viewpoints of the medical specialists the CCSS has.
They go from one extreme to the next. One study shows that we will soon have a deficit of 650 specialists while another shows gaps have been closed.
What is the truth? Is the lack of specialists to blame for such long waiting lists or are all 57 medical specialties covered significantly? It seems that real and updated figures are not yet available.
The National Union of Specialist Physicians demands the reactivation of a high level commission to monitor the deficit of professionals in all hospitals in the country. The College of Physicians warns that a crisis is just around the corner if the CCSS does not update figures and make plans to train residents based on accurate figures.
Things to be taken into account include over 800 resident doctors who are in training, doctors coming from abroad, and the current capacity of hospitals, which has not grown much since the seventies.
