The Surgical Long Wait for Women in Costa Rica Might Shorten

Costa Rica Healthcare – Women from Guápiles may get long awaited surgical procedures in the Center for Comprehensive Health Care, CAIS, in Siquirres.

The scheduled surgeries are gynecological in nature and will be done on an outpatient basis.

These surgeries are simple enough to not require a hospital stay. Some of the women have been on a waiting list since 2014. The list was very long and then paralyzed due to a lack of specialists.

CAIS staff and specialists will dedicate resources to more complex surgical interventions and help decongest the Guápiles Hospital. For now, the procedures will be performed during the workday in ambulatory mode.

These actions are a part of the Timely Attention Plan approved by the CCSS. Also part of the plan is that last year the Caja authorized the hospital to accelerate some procedures in the evening, leading to 5,700 additional surgeries being performed.
