Deputies were able to use a revision motion to prevent the death of the idea of a loan to restore and protect the National Theater. The loan was rejected in the second debate on Monday.
There will be another revision in order to, hopefully, get the 38 votes needed for the initiative. As of now, there are 31 for it and 21 against it. The loan would be for $31.3 million with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.
Some of the issues have to do with complaints about the management and administration of the theater, though those in favor explain that we must leave this cultural inheritance to the next generation.
Deputy Gustavo Viales explained that “Just as we invest in ports, roads and infrastructure, it is also important to invest in culture.” Some see it as an expense and others as a legacy.
