Costa Rica’s Moody’s Investment Rating Gets Better

Moody’s reduced Costa Rica’s risk rating from negative B1 to stable B2 this February 10th, according to the chief to the Legislative Assembly, Rodrigo Chaves. The official announcement happened this afternoon, in New York.

This information was presented before the plenary of the Legislative Assembly, as was an explanation regarding the increase registered in the fiscal deficit in 2019 and a series of extraordinary measures to face it. The weighted average cost of the debt is 7.9%.

The change in the country’s risk rating will cost the State about $250 million a year, unfortunately. The US agency uses a method to create risk ratings. In this case, it classified Costa Rica’s emissions as speculative and the country as being of high credit risk.

Based on current trends, the debt projected will increase to about 70% of the GDP by 2022. The group of investors that can buy debt bonds from the country is shrinking. The last time the risk rating was reduced was in December 2018.

Ann Patton Gets Her Jewels Back from Costa Rica for $1.3 Million

The woman who was accused, sentenced, then acquitted of murdering her husband has paid $1.3 million in taxes in order to recover a lot of jewels that were confiscated while their rightful owner could be determined.

The jewels, valued at $7 million, were stored in the vault of the Central Bank of Costa Rica. They were seized in January 2010 when the death of Ann Maxine Patton’s husband was investigated.

Lawyers presented related documents and the court found no administrative irregularity. The National Customs court of the Ministry of Finance issued a ruling confirming that Patton was the rightful owner of the 3,000 jewels, cargo that weighs over 100 kilos.

Additionally, the idea of contraband was definitively dismissed. The jewels were acquired legally and the couple’s wealth was found to be “clean.” At one point, they purchased a 30-carat diamond for $3 million and sold it for $5 million.

Flower Exportation in Costa Rica Increases

After a two-year fall in the sale of flowers from Costa Rica, 2019 was the year that reversed the trend, bringing an increase of 5.3% over 2018. Producers expect that the increase will be maintained for at least the next two years.

The Central Bank highlighted recovery in the agricultural sector which includes flower production. According to the Foreign Trade Promoter, while the total in sales for 2019 was $29.8 million, up from $28.3 million in 2018, it’s still nowhere near the $38.6 million sold in 2016.

92% of flower sales from Costa Rica go to the United States. Central American countries, Canada, and Holland also purchase them. There are cycles that affect the global economy and the economy of each country. Right now, the U.S. is in a good period of consumption.

The rebound in agricultural production and exports reflects the normalization of weather conditions. There’s been a great increase in coffee because of the recovery of plantations that were in a period of renewal.

Costa Rican Yokasta Valle Continuing Legacy of Hanna Gabriel

Yokasta Valle defended her title. The 105-pound world champion of women’s boxing defeated Filipino Carleans Rivas. The event took place at the BN Arena Gymnasium in Hatillo.

Valle is continuing the legacy that Hanna Gabriel started. She is thankful that Hanna paved the way. She is also proud of her own example that through adversity greatness can be achieved.

“The important thing is to believe and trust in oneself, strive, and surround yourself with people with the same vision,” she said. Some of the people she shares a vision with include her coach Marco Delgado and promoter Mario Vega. Her family has also been a great support to her.

She recently signed an agreement with Grupo Mutual by which the financial entity will grant her a monthly financial aid package for a year.

An Experiment in Consciousness

Homo sapiens is an experiment in consciousness that is failing. Why are we failing, and what would it mean to succeed as a species?

Not only the diversity of life on Earth, but the viability of all life is imperiled by man’s rapaciousness. The vaunted victory of capitalism has enshrined selfishness and greed on a global scale.

The individual matters, not as the fundamental unit of capitalism and consumerism, or even so-called democracy, but because the freedom and creative potential of the individual is sine qua non of humanity.

Unlike words like “unpack” and “problematic,” two philosophical terms that have become commonplace to the point of meaninglessness, this Latin term is not likely become a commonplace—sine qua non. It literally means ‘without which, not.’ That is, “an essential condition; a thing that is absolutely necessary.”

Speaking personally, there are three distinct aspects of one’s nature—contemplative, philosophical and political. I’ve found a balance between the inner life and the intellectual life, but the political side remains…problematic.

Essentially, I’ve been working to combine vita contemplativa and vita activa (the contemplative life and the active life) within myself in a harmonious way. I’ve been failing.

Is it possible for a human being to live and grow as a human being in this culture? America and the West, indeed the world, continue to plunge toward the abyss, but I only know one other person who still gives a damn.

I feel the original and ongoing ‘sin’ (that is, mistake) is the psychologically infinite regress of thought and self. The domination of thought and self in human life is what separates us from the Earth, each other, and immanence.

A friend asked, “Are you talking about a state where the brain reaches a place of total superiority in which it acts and thinks without the conscious presence of the ‘observer’ or person?”

It’s not a matter of ‘superiority’ of the brain. And when the psychological construct of the separate observer and self ends, if only temporarily, the person is still there, fully present.

So there is a state in which the fictitious observer yields to awareness, and the brain is simply observing, without the filter and operating program of the observer/self choosing and interpreting.

Though intellectuals and most philosophers deny it, when the observer ends, the brain simply observes things as they are in the moment. Our brains are in disorder because psychological separation and the tribalism of nationalism still rule us. Why that is so, and why does nature make awakening, much less illumination, such a high bar?

Mouthpieces of darkness moronically propose more of the disease as cure, uttering such treasonous trash against humanity as: “All we have to do is live up to this privilege of being American, because a million immigrant ancestors left it for us by suffering for it, by dying for the American Creed.”

That’s the sound of an ideology in its death throes. For those who are serious about meeting the human crisis, ending of the observer is the place to begin. One has to diligently do one’s own spadework every day.

Observing without the observer is not too difficult. A person just has to take half hour a day to passively watch the movement of their thoughts and emotions, seeing them as a single movement without choice and choosing.

This caliber of watchfulness allows awareness to grow quicker than the infinite regress of the observer. Unwilled, undirected attention ends the observer.

Make the space and allow awareness to grow quicker than the ancient habit of the self-centered activity, which arises from the millisecond splitting off of the observer from what the brain is observing. It needs to be taught and shown by example to children. Then they will not become conditioned as Americans or any other divisive thing.

My friend asks, “I’m curious to know what the benefits of this would provide as opposed to not reaching this state?”

That’s a strange question to my mind! Look how humans are destroying the earth and each other through division, conflict, greed and fragmentation. The ultimate source of man’s disorder is the observer/self that separates and thinks first and last of itself.

Therefore the negation in methodless meditation of psychological separation is essential to heal the individual, and change the disastrous course of humankind.

I realize it is paradox, though hopefully not a contradiction, to attempt to convey in words that which is only possible when one lets go of words completely. Playfully experiment with observation!

Costa Rica Tourism Up 4% For 2019

Costa Rica saw an increase of 4.1% in visitors to the country from 2018-2019. Globally, tourism is up by 4%, so Costa Rica is a bit above the average. Visitors stay an average of 12.6 nights in Costa Rica. This is up one night from 2018 to 2019.

This information, from the barometer of the World Tourism Organization, was released on Wednesday during the signing of a decree to create the National Tourism Competitiveness Council.

Arrivals by air increased by 4.5% between 2018 and 2019. This is the most important way of arrival into the country and thus is the basis for promotion planning to attract tourism.

Costa Rica is also better in the perception of the quality of the destination, which now scored an 80.7 whereas in 2018 it scored 2.9% lower. Costa Rica is expecting even more competitiveness in 2020, due to strengthening public-private coordination and enhancing advantages the country has.
