Fines for Talking on The Phone & Driving in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – 1,600 drivers are dealing with fines after talking on the phone or eating or drinking in the car.

The penalty for these faults is ¢103,000. Having a pet on your lap is also prohibited in order to ensure hands stay on the wheel and carries the same fine.

The Transit authorities recommend stopping the vehicle to eat and drink and either stopping or using a handsfree phone system. Both hands must remain on the wheel while driving.

This is the first time in my life I’ve heard that you can’t take a sip of soda or pop some french fries while driving, but apparently these are activities incompatible with driving and 1,627 drivers were fined between January and October this year.

Authorities remind us that there is not an immediate need to view or answer messages in a manner so impulsively that it puts our lives and the lives of others at risk. Put safety first.
