Premature Baby Born with COVID in Costa Rica

A premature baby with covid-19 was airlifted from a hospital in Guanacaste to the National Children’s Hospital. He was born at 28 weeks and weighs only 800 grams. His condition requires very specialized care.

He was born on May 28 and affected with covid-19 in the hospital. The source has not been traced. His family does not have the virus. Upon receiving the diagnosis, a rapid response team came for him.

He was accompanied on the flight Tuesday morning by a pediatrician and emergency specialist, professional nurse, respiratory therapist, and pediatrician-neonatologist. His progress is being monitored 24/7. The parents are kept in the loop by phone daily.

The Liberian hospital is offering the parents and relatives psychological help. The mother is in isolation.

The patient’s health and life are most complicated by his prematurity and weight, not the covid-19 infection. Low birth weight is involved in 80% of deaths in the first year of life for babies worldwide.
