“Letters to Men” To Be Presented in Costa Rica

Costa Rica Entertainment – David Ulloa will present his book “Cartas a hombres,” “Letters to Men,” on Saturday, February 3, at the Woki bar in the neighborhood of La California, San José, beginning at 8pm.

The presentation is free.

This writer came out of the closet ten years ago and found his connection to the world of young gay men in literature and film. He began writing his own fictional stories but later realized his best work was based on his own story.

He wrote the nine stories that make up his book. It’s a series of stories portraying the gay youth of the Central Valley in Costa Rica. It’s not meant as activism or a political pamphlet.

It is about people being happy with what they are without the need for validation.

The stories include themes like the search for sex, comments on polyamory, and questions about masculinity. Through his book, he makes clear that we are all equal but different.

Il Duce Lives!

Watch any five minutes of President Trump’s State of the Union Speech on YouTube, and you’ll agree that he channeled Mussolini for the entire address. From the fixed, jutting chin and upturned head, to the arrogant nodding to his own xenophobic lines, to the hideous, degenerate mouth, to his hollow clapping throughout the speech, the clownish Trump aped the clownish Mussolini. It was evil reincarnate. America, which once “lit up the entire world,” now darkens it beyond measure.

Trump called for not only keeping Guantanamo open, but for sending more “non-combatant terrorists” there. No new prisoners have been sent to Guantanamo since 2008. Since this small, ugly man, who wants to Make America Hate Again, is advocating taking us back to the torture and rendition of Bush-Cheney, I’m republishing a column I wrote almost a decade ago, entitled, “How Obama Can Win.” I’d forgotten it, and its prescience frightens even me.

———————

Since defeating the Clintons earlier this summer, Barack Obama has dropped Martin Luther King’s poetic and compelling phrase, “the fierce urgency of now.” Lately Obama often speaks prosaically of the imperative of “fundamental change.” That seemingly small shift encapsulates what is going wrong with the Obama campaign.

In America, individualism has produced a moribund culture and country, which the Republicans in turn exploit with a patina of patriotism. Clinging to a construct they subconsciously know is already history, the throwbacks at the Republican Convention annoyingly and cloyingly put “America First.” Once again the strategy is working.

Patriotism is the ‘third rail’ that Barack Obama cannot touch. What the Obama campaign does not realize however is that unlike during the Clinton years, rational appeals to economic self-interest won’t work. The majority of Americans want collective inspiration, not reminders of their individual perspiration. That’s what Obama can supply and McCain most certainly cannot.

In other words, as scary and weird as the global economy has gotten, it’s neither “the economy, stupid,” nor is it 9.11, seven years following the visible sign of the collapse of the old USA.

The Obama campaign has calculated that appeals to the self-interest of people’s pocketbooks will trump appeals to patriotism by the Republican Scoundrels’ Party in power. That’s a bad bet. What won Obama the Democratic nomination was his ability to get Americans to look beyond parochialism in all its forms. But his campaign decided that inspirational appeal wouldn’t win in the general election, and now his ‘change’ message has been usurped by an ‘exciting’ female appendage to McCain, “Pit Bull Palin.”

The harder Obama tries to convince Americans that he’s a true blue American, the more un-American

Republicans are able to paint him. The more Obama tries to focus on the economy, the more the Republicans run over him with their patriotic steam engine. Obama represents a different world-view, and the more he runs away from it, the more he plays into Republican hands.

Indeed, the Obama campaign has allowed the Republicans to once again turn a Democrat’s strength into a weakness by portraying his gift to inspire as empty-suited celebrity.

There is an inescapable bandwagon effect in politics. By shifting his focus from an appeal to the hope of the heart to the economics of the head, Obama lost the wave.

What does “fundamental change” really mean? To my mind it means one thing above all: To emotionally perceive the world as a human being, rather than as a member of any ethnic, religious or national group. After thousands of years of civilization, humans are still tribal creatures, and it is that fundamental feature of human nature that can and must change.

Obama doesn’t need to be impolitic about the patriotism issue; but he can’t keep trying to change the subject either. Rather, he needs to do what he does best—recast and redefine patriotism in a new context and in a new way.

Tribalistic mentality takes many forms. In America, a regressive veneer of glorified tribalism is painted over the rot that individualism has wrought. If America is to reverse its decline however, and contribute to the advancement of human civilization again, it has to move beyond regressive individualistic nationalism into a new way of being and seeing the world.

Great leaders reach beyond their tribe and times for their insights and ideas. They do so by reaching back and recasting the perennial truths of the human condition. Examples in American history include Jefferson and Lincoln. Both strove to articulate and actualize truths greater than ‘my country.’ Their stamp is what gave America whatever greatness it formerly had.

When America was a young nation, its worldview was defined by the untamed wilderness of an unexplored continent. Though many crimes were committed against indigenous peoples and the earth, people came together during westward expansion to democratically decide what and where and how to build the new country.

The messy march of human civilization is no longer driven by the opportunities inherent in ‘conquering’ a new continent. That’s a lesson that Aussies and Kiwis, who came after us, have learned before us.

Individualism is the dynamo powering economic expansion now, even in places like China and India. But individualism is not the ‘enlightened self-interest’ that was the core philosophical precept of America’s Founders. Rather, it has degenerated into ignorant self-interest. And without articulating and inspiring a new way of seeing the world, Republican repackaging will Donald Trump the economic appeal to rational self-interest.

Even in China, the rise of middle class consumerism is generating American-style individualism. And although individualism may be an unfortunate stage in human development, it’s a stage humankind cannot stay stuck in for long.

If Obama is to win, and lead a “fundamental change” in America, he has to articulate and inspire Americans to play a role in meeting the immense challenges to human civilization. That requires a rhetoric that reflects neither “America First,” nor me first.

Haunted Fiddletown

Ghosts & The Supernatural – Something draws me and my wife Deanna Jaxine Stinson to Fiddletown. We received all kinds of reports of haunted activity at Fiddletown. But, you are probably wondering where is Fiddletown? Fiddletown is about 45 minutes away from Sacramento, close to the town of Jackson, CA. Fiddletown was settled in 1849 by Missourians who came to California because of the California Gold Rush. Fiddletown had its share of mining camps and trading centers. In the 1860 census, the Chinese community in Fiddletown was up to 2000.

Fiddletown got its name because of Dry Creek. Dry Creek would run dry in the Summer months and the miners basically didn’t work in the Summertime, because they had no water from Dry Creek. People would say they just fiddled around, henceforth was born the town’s name. A local citizen was embarrassed by the name and lobbied to have the name changed to Oleta, the name of his daughter in 1878. The residents didn’t have it and changed the name back to Fiddletown. Fiddetown has one notable resident, his name is Leon “Whitey” Thompson (1923-2005). Whitey was a former inmate at Alcatraz and author. A nice place to stop at is the Chew Kee Store Museum, State Registered Landmark #35. This museum was once a herb store during the gold rush and is now a museum. The store was built by Yee Fung Cheung. Yee received his 15 minutes of fame for saving the life of then Governor Leland Stanford’s wife from pulmonary disorder. Mr. Cheung saved her with his herbs.

Now that you got the history of Fiddletown, let’s talk about the paranormal activity that happens in this historic town. Whitney Collins of Jackson, CA says that while walking through the town with her husband she came upon a floating white mist. The floating white mist followed them for about 300 yards. If they turned a corner, the mist would turn a corner. Before it vanished, it actually tapped Whitney on her shoulder. Entity Identified: Fiddetown Floating Mist.

Other visitors have seen pinkish type of orbs going in and out of bushes. Matt Tyler of Copperopolis says that his grandmother once told him they are “Pinkies”. Matt’s grandmother says that the Pinkies, a type of fairy was brought to Missouri and finally to Fiddletown by August Templar, a miner. August captured the Pinkies in Ireland and it is said if you capture a Pinkie, it will bring you good luck. August was able to gain a considerable amount of wealth by mining gold. After he hit an amount that he felt comfortable with, he then retreated back to Missouri. Elemental Identified: Pinkies.

Some residents have made claim that they have seen the ghost of Leon “Whitey” Thompson walking around in the open fields. Whitey looks like he is looking for something in the fields and at times looks frustrated. While watching Whitey, he will dissipate into nothingness. Ghost Identified: Whitey. Meg Batista claims that during Fall, people will claim that they see a large black dog, that looks similar to a Rottweiler. The big black dog will bark and at times howl. Meg while visiting, says that on one particular night, she was scared to death, because this big black dog was viciously chasing her son. When her son fell down and he thought the dog was going to be on top of him, he looked up and there was no dog around. Cryptid Identified: Monster Dog.

Some residents claim that they hear muffled disembodied voices around the Chew Kee Store Museum. Some other residents claim that they had their hair pulled and even been touched at the Chew Kee Store Museum. One resident said while walking around the building, an entity pushed him. He could feel the entity’s hands on his chest. As he continued to walk, it pushed him again, but this time he felt one hand on his shoulder pushing. The 3rd and final push was a hand to the face. He thinks he may have provoked a spirit, because he was complaining to his wife about driving to Fiddletown and that he was not impressed by the Chew Kee Store Museum. He feels he may have insulted the ghost that hangs out at this museum. He even says it could have been the ghost of Yee Fung Cheung.

A hunter who does not want to be identified, claims that while hunting squirrels near North Fork Dry Creek near Fiddletown, he came across what he thought was a white mist. He just got done cursing a bit, because he missed his shot on two squirrels. The white mist approached him and then disappeared. After the white mist disappeared, he was attacked by flies. Flies started landing on his arms, neck, face and head. It got so bad, he ran away from the area and jumped into his truck. The flies came through an open window and some of the flies remained in his truck as he drove away.

With all of the reports of haunted activity in Fiddletown, my wife and I, will be investigating Fiddletown and interviewing some of the residents and we will see for ourselves, what is truly going on in Fiddletown. Stay tuned.

The Costa Rica MEIC Scam

Costa Rica News – Beware of any calls claiming to be from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC).

MEIC has alerted authorities to a scam strategy where someone is making calls pretending to be from MEIC.

The fraudulent calls are about electronic invoices and digital signatures. The scammers call asking about digital billing. They offer advice on accessing a site and complete procedures in which personal passwords are required.

This call is related to the page costarica.regulations.org. This page is not official from MEIC or the government. Government sites and all official pages of the public sector always end in go.cr.

The public is advised not to provide any personal or company information. Additionally, please report these calls. The police and judicial authorities have been alerted to the false website and calls.

Hundreds of Species of Birds at Risk in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – I just returned from Costa Rica, my fifth visit, and it has become increasingly clear that Costa Rica is struggling valiantly to protect its 840 species of birds, many of which are in jeopardy. According to residents and government officials, the avifauna is in dire straits.

About 20 million tourists visit Costa Rica each year, many to view and photograph birds. A major push to stem avian population losses has become an economic necessity.

“The most important threats are the cage-bird industry and hunting,” confirmed researchers Alexander Skutch and Gary Stiles. “Almost anything larger than a small pigeon is hunted for food by the country folk.”

They added that it is a part of Costa Rican culture to have a parrot as a pet.

According to the Costa Rican Toucan Rescue Ranch, 50-60 per cent of Costa Rican households have pets illegally taken from the wild, mostly birds.

However, in 2017, the government banned the private possession of wild birds except under the authority of a permit.

“Now, people who illegally possess wild birds as pets face big fines, and even jail,” explained wildlife specialist Ronald J. to me. “In one case, a woman who was illegally keeping dozens of wild-taken parrots as pets was fined and sent to prison.”

During my previous visit, two years ago, illegally-trapped parrots and parakeets were being kept in about 20 per cent of the homes in the Sarapiqui district. All had their wings clipped to prevent flying and the birds were kept outdoors,  day and night.

On my recent visit, in early January 2018, pet parrots were very scarce. It seemed the threat of prosecution has reduced the interest in taking parrots from the wild as pets.

On the other hand, in Costa Rica, the international illegal pet-bird trade is flourishing. A single great green macaw chick, taken from a wild nest, is worth US$2,000.00 on the black market, according to the Costa Rican director of customs. Inestimable numbers of trapped birds are smuggled from Costa Rica via San Jose’s Juan Santamaria International Airport.

“Traffickers are rarely caught,” one airport official admitted.

Also, illegal logging has reduced native forests by up to 70 per cent.

Facing Misogyny, and Misandry

My mother, may she rest in peace (or already be reborn and growing in learning in her or his next life), was an ardent anti-communist. “When the Russians finally throw off the chains of communism,” she would often say, “we Americans will be there to help them build a democracy and market.”

After a dozen repetitions, that bromide went in one year and out the other. But something must have stuck, and providence, or fate, or whatever, was at work, because I found myself meeting high-level Russians in San Francisco during the heady days of glasnost and perestroika. In short order, I accepted an invitation to Moscow in January of 1990 to start a joint-venture company.

This piece isn’t about that failed venture however, which was more about philosophy as praxis than business practices. It’s about what Russian women taught me about the relationship between the sexes long before the Pyrrhic victory of American women in the war between the sexes.

We’ve come to a place where leading female voices evince the hubris usually associated with men, uttering poppycock such as, “All of us [meaning, all you men] must confront exactly what so many women have known all too well: You are a body, only a body, and nothing more.”

Though I was the guest of very powerful men as the USSR teetered on the edge of collapse, it was Russian women that impressed me. I was feted wherever I went as the vanguard of a coming wave of Americans. Like me, Russians naively believed Americans would help them build a democracy and market as their hated communist system crumbled around them (as if from mother’s mouth to their ears).

The greatest honor was being invited to dinner my last night in Russia by a six Russian women I had the privilege to get to know a bit.

They had noticed my reaction to the blatant male chauvinism and domination by Russian men. I responded to their Russian honesty (which can be brutally blunt at times), by saying that in the face of male domination that few American women can even imagine, clearly Russian women had to be strong.

During that memorable conversation, in which we talked about the superficial differences and underlying similarities between men and women in what was then a bipolar world of antagonistic and agonistic superpowers, one of the women uttered a memorable Russian proverb.

“Men go first,” she said, “and if it works, women follow.”

I asked whether that implied male domination, superiority and privilege. We agreed it did not necessarily imply these things, just that traditionally men tended to take greater risks, and go into uncharted territory before women do.

In the years since, I’ve told the story of the dinner with Russian women culminating in the proverb to numerous American women, without philosophical embellishment. Almost to a one, they’ve had the same reaction, “Now it’s our turn to go first.” I’ve felt that to be a cringeworthy misunderstanding bordering on misandry.

There’s a word you’ve probably never heard. It means the opposite of misogyny, the hatred of women. More and more, it cuts the other way. There’s a lot of misandry in America today, sleazebags like Harvey Weinstein and Steve Wynn, and true monsters like Larry Nassar notwithstanding.

Truth be told, men are the weaker sex. About a generation ago, right around the time the USSR collapsed externally and the US collapsed internally, American men quit on life en masse. Women, not having that option, had to step into the vacuum left by so-called male leadership.

So it’s little wonder, as a 20-something woman put it to me a few years ago, that “men have become women, and women have become men.” Nor that we have a complete retrograde, Rat pack, male chauvinist pig president. Men are lost in a way that women aren’t, and perhaps cannot be.

About 15 years ago, I asked a well-known poet in town if she agreed with the old expression from anthropology, “women are the culture bearers.” She said she did. I asked whether she agreed that this is a dead culture. She said yes.

Then why, I inquired, are women keeping this dead culture going?

She had no response. Is it because not enough men have gone into the wilderness within and come back intact to say, ‘let’s go, we can live and thrive here?’ Is it because too many women assume power and domination are givens, and ‘it’s our turn to rule?’

Power is not a given, any more than domination by men or women is a given. The infinite frontier is not outer space, but inner space. It cannot be ‘conquered’ however, only continuously learned about through abiding self-knowing.

Perhaps, when more men truly begin exploring it, we’ll find that women have been there all along, waiting for us. In any case, only when men and women walk and work together as equals will things change.

5 Millionth Tico To Be Born This Year

Costa Rica News – The birth of the 5 millionth Tico inhabitant was expected to happen around March 25th but the expected event has been postponed to July 16th.

This change is because there were fewer births than expected in 2017, even fewer than in 2016. There was also an increase in the number of deaths in 2017.

We are not talking about the 5 millionth birth, rather the 5 millionth living inhabitant. This takes into account the number of births and deaths each year. It is a figure that represents how many Ticos are alive and requiring public services.

The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) now estimates that the country will reach 5 million living inhabitants on July 16th, 2018, at 7am. This assumes a net migratory balance of zero, because the number leaving the country and entering the country are equal, meaning the population will grow by births and increase by deaths. There is only a 9% chance that the 5 millionth tico will be an immigrant compared to a 91% chance that he or she will be born in the country.

The four millionth Tico was born on February 24, 2001. By 2030, there will be more people over age 65 than under 15. The six millionth Tico is expected in 2045. After that, the population is expected to decline.

Math Shows The Number of Space Aliens That May Be Out There

World News – If you say you believe space aliens exist, I doubt your friends will be shocked. In a universe aglow with 2 trillion galaxies, you’d be supremely smug to think that Earth alone hosts clever creatures. One 2015 poll showed that 54 percent of Americans feel confident that intelligent aliens are out there.

Maybe that optimism comes from science fiction. After all, if there are no extraterrestrials, there isn’t much of a mission for the Starship Enterprise or job openings for Vulcans. Fiction aside, many scientists agree that the cosmos is undoubtedly sprinkled — perhaps liberally sprinkled — with life. Even sentient life.

But can we say anything about that sprinkling? Can we hazard a guess as to how close the nearest aliens might be?

This is an uncertain business but not a new one. In 1961 astronomer Frank Drake devised a simple equation for estimating the number of “technically active” societies in our galaxy. That bit of easy math is known as the Drake Equation, and it’s often said to be the second most famous formula in science (the first being Einstein’s E = mc2).

If you look up the formula online, you’ll see that it takes into account the odds that there are habitable planets around other stars, the likelihood that life will arise, and the probability that biology will occasionally evolve to produce clever beings. But even without wrestling with the Drake Equation, we can use similar reasoning to gauge the plentitude of alien societies and how close the Klingons might be.

We start with recent research showing that one in six stars hosts a planet hospitable to life. No, not one in a million. One in six. So let’s take that number and run with it. Next we have to make a few assumptions. In particular, if you were given a million Earth-size worlds, what fraction do you think would ever beget technically sophisticated inhabitants?

Life on our planet began quickly: random chemical activity in 350 million trillion gallons of ocean water spawned a reproducing molecule within a few hundred million years. So maybe biology doesn’t need much of a goad to get started. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to figure that at least half of all planets suitable for life actually produce it.

Intelligence is less certain. The dinosaurs were a good design but didn’t do well in school. But let’s say that one in 100 biology-encrusted planets eventually coughs up some thinking beings. And, as per Frank Drake, let’s also assume that any Klingons out there continue to hang out for 10,000 years before self-destructing (nuclear war, anyone?) or meeting some other woeful end.

Do the arithmetic, and you’ll find that one in 100 million star systems has technically adept inhabitants. That’s not much different than the fraction of jackpot tickets in this week’s Powerball lottery.

So how close are the nearest signaling extraterrestrials? If we’re going to pay good money to fire up the warp drive and visit some bumpy-headed aliens, how far do we have to travel? Well, the average distance between stars in our part of the galaxy is 4.2 light-years (the distance to Proxima Centauri). That is, for every cube of space that’s 4.2 light-years on a side, you’ll find (on average) one star. Now imagine a bigger box, 2,000 light-years on a side. It will contain 100 million star boxes, and one sophisticated civilization.

By this rough and ready calculation, the nearest aliens are probably between one and two thousand light-years away. In other words, no closer than the three bright stars of Orion’s Belt. Sure, alien neighbors might be farther — or closer. But this order-of-magnitude estimate tells us that they’re not next door. They haven’t heard our news reports, and they’re not likely to have any incentive to visit. They simply don’t know we’re here.

By the way, we probably aren’t going to visit them either. Today’s fastest rockets would take at least 20 million years to get there, by which time you’re going to be awfully tired of on-board pretzels.

Yes, the aliens are likely around, and 10,000 societies could inhabit our galaxy (not to mention those other galaxies!) They’re not close. But they may be discoverable. That’s why we continue to search the sky for radio signals launched into the ether long ago by our cosmic brethren.

Volunteer Gravely Injured During Costa Rica Project

Costa Rica News – A volunteer is in critical condition after falling from a ladder while serving on a SAGE and Maranatha Volunteers International mission trip in Costa Rica. Ken Lauren, of Snoqualmie, Washington State, United States, was painting the interior of the Bribri Seventh-day Adventist Church when the accident occurred, on Jan. 11. He is currently at the Hospital Clínica Bíblica in San Jose, Costa Rica.

It is not exactly clear what precipitated the fall, but Lauren suffered head injuries from the accident and was taken by paramedics to the local hospital. He was later transferred to a larger hospital in San Jose where he underwent surgery and is currently in a medically induced coma to facilitate recovery.

Lauren was serving as part of a Washington-based team called SAGE, Seniors in Action for God in Excellence, an Adventist ministry focused on providing fellowship and service opportunities for seniors. SAGE has coordinated more than 20 projects through Maranatha Volunteers International, a supporting ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church which assists building and development efforts around the world. This year’s project was focused on painting the interior and exterior of multiple churches, constructing One-Day Churches, and coordinating a variety of outreach activities.

Lauren and his wife, Linda, have been on nearly a dozen projects with SAGE and Maranatha. Linda was also part of the SAGE group in Costa Rica. She and her daughter are with Lauren in Costa Rica.

“Ken and Linda have been dedicated volunteers for nearly two decades, and their spirit embodies the very mission of Maranatha,” said Volunteers Projects director David Lopez. “We are grateful that Ken is receiving top of the line care, and we are in regular communication with his family and Maranatha’s support staff in Costa Rica.”

Lopez said they believe in the power of God to assist everyone involved in this time of need. “We are grateful to serve a powerful God, who provides healing and courage through the prayers of His people,” he said. “We also ask for everyone’s continued prayers for Ken.”

Maranatha, founded in 1969, coordinates more than 60 mission trips a year, creating service opportunities around the world. Last year, Maranatha mobilized more than 2,200 volunteers to more than a dozen countries.

Redwoods Without Me

It was sprinkling when I left the house, and 20 minutes into the sitting downstream from Cedar Grove in Chico’s big city park it began to rain fairly hard. I ducked into the space between a trio of redwoods near the picnic site, and they provided excellent shelter.

Redwoods don’t normally grow in this part of California, and who knows how many decades ago this little group was planted. These three are fairly large trees by usual standards, but small as redwoods go.

The soft, stringy bark of the redwoods was pleasing to touch and smell as the rain fell. Man is an arboreal species, and for millions of years, even long after we began to walk on two feet, we slept in the trees, and found safety in them.

If you’ve ever seen Coastal Redwood north of San Francisco, or the gargantuan girthed Sequoias in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, you’d laugh at the idea of our ancient ancestors sleeping in them. The lowest limbs are at least a hundred feet off the ground.

The rain stopped and the skies cleared some. There was even a bit of late afternoon sun. I emerged from the shelter of the redwoods and took my seat again, facing upstream with my back to the picnic table.

Watching a long stretch of the swollen stream flow by, the mind-as-thought quieted in the act of simply attending to every sensation, thought and emotion without judgment or choice. What is is the door; attention without effort or choice is the key that opens it.

The mind without thought has infinite beauty. Then it’s not ‘my mind’ or ‘your mind;’ it is simply mind, perhaps the mind of the universe itself.

It’s strange how love flows into one with the ending of thought through complete attention. The idea of love precludes the actuality of love. Love seems to be intrinsic to every cell on earth and every atom in the universe. Why then is it so rare for

we humans to feel this impersonal love?

Man is a very cunning animal, but he is not intelligent. Intelligence has nothing to do with smarts, much less cunning. Intelligence is completely beyond thought. Indeed, the more thought, the less intelligence.

Nature had cleansed and reclaimed the municipal park that from the humans that see only as a playground. It was a joy to walk muddy paths in boots, especially in a meditative state. Smells, sounds and sights are much more intense, and one feels alive as our distant forebears must have felt alive.

Two questions I’ve been asking came to mind as I walked. Why does the mind/brain revert to thought/time? What prevents the flame of attention from burning sufficiently strongly to end psychological thought (the ‘me’ and all its petty concerns) irrevocably? Certainly that must be illumination.

Which relates to the second question. Why, if the evolution of symbolic thought gave the brain the capacity for conscious awareness of the cosmic mind, is thought such an impediment to total awareness, and illumination so difficult and rare?

There is no answer to such questions. But asking and holding them—not repetitively but insistently—brings insight, and perhaps, liberation.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Has Arrived in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – A smartphone with artificial intelligence has arrived in Costa Rica. The Mate 10 Pro is a new model offered by the Chinese company Huawei.

The manufacturer hopes to seduce Costa Ricans with this ultra-high-end device.

The company launched the product on the 25th of this month. It is a dual camera phone with 6GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It has a dual sim and a great battery that promises to last more than a day.

When about to take a photo, the device’s artificial intelligence has the ability to identify up to 13 different scenes and optimize the picture depending on what’s in the photo, such as a plate of food or a pet.

The Neurological Processing Unit in the device also monitors the needs of the user and adjusts the power accordingly, leading to a longer time between charges. It learns in real time the behavior patterns of users.

The cash price of the device is ¢599,900. There are also payment plans starting from ¢12,000 per month.

Costa Ricans Think Stray Dogs Are a Health Hazard

Costa Rica News – Over half of Ticos perceive stray dogs to be a risk to public health, according to a UCR survey. 52.3% of people think that dogs generate problems such as bites and transmission of diseases.

The survey interviewed 1,236 people over 18 years of age from all over the country.
Inhabitants believe that diseases can be transmitted by feces, petting the dogs, and even breathing in bacteria they leave in the air.

79.2% of those interviewed said they felt they had been harmed in some way by street dogs, which includes dogs who have a home but walk outside alone for part of the day. This included reasons such as that the dogs break garbage bags outside the houses, create excessive noise and leave excrement on public spaces.

Costa Rica has made efforts in animal welfare issues and in controlling the street dog and cat populations in humane ways. The study showed that Costa Rica are against poisoning the animals and for castrating them.

Legends of the Moon and Poetry

Enchanted Moon
Your heart is like a mirror and I am the seer of love.
Words rise up from my lips and I can feel the sun kiss me.
I am never alone.
Your anger is like a natural disaster.
I put the beast to sleep with a song.
My halo is a divine flower growing from a seed I nourish with powerful thoughts.
Our souls are like vines twisting, nurtured in green gardens of the underworld.
Dreams pour from the moon and slip through my hands like memories.
Diana Pagan Goddess of the Moonlight
Diana is the goddess of the hunt. She transformed into a goddess of the moonlight. She is a great goddess and has been worshipped in many positive ways. She is the queen of Heaven. She is always standing up for women and their rights. She is fabled to have turned herself into a black cat and snuck into Lucifer’s chambers as he was sleeping. She then got pregnant in his bed with their daughter, Aradia who is the goddess of the witches.

Moonlight
Can you feel the moonlight?
Super moon come closer to me.
Whisper secrets of the night
into my ears like a flowing sea.
Moonflower is growing in time
with the song of outer space.
You are the paradigm of beauty,
Your visions and spells encase
me in a magic shell like a glass coffin
sleeping forever and waiting for you
like Endymion and Selene dreaming
dreaming my heart in the moonlight
is blooming.

The Goddess of the Moon and Endymion
The goddess of the moon has a different name in each culture. Diana is a derivative of a Latin word meaning bright sky. As the Queen of Heaven she rules as Inanna. In Greek mythology she can be compared to Selene. There are legends of love in each culture between her and Endymion. He was a very beautiful mortal. She found him to be irresistible. She wanted to have him forever yet he was a mortal. She begged God to put him into an eternal sleep and he did. He sleeps eternally dreaming.

The Legend of the Vampire
In Greek mythology, the legend of the vampire began with Selene and Ambrogio. Ambrogio was a handsome Italian man with a desire to travel. He wanted to visit Greece to have his fortunes told. Recorded in the scriptures of Delphi was this tale. He met Selene at the moon temple and they fell in love. Apollo, the god of the sun was also in love with Selene. He placed a curse on Ambrogio that he could not go out into the sun so that he could not go back and meet Selene at the moon temple. Ambrogio ran into a cave where Hades was dwelling. He told him he would help if he could recover the hunting bow of Artemis. He sold his soul to the devil. After many days he began writing poetry for Selene and begged Artemis for her help. She decided to help him. The lovers were finally able to meet and Ambrogio wrote her a note asking her to meet him at his ship as he was to set sail back to Italy. He was sleeping in a coffin and he told her not to open it until after the sunset because the sun would burn him. She sailed with him and they were in love together. Artemis helped Selene to become immortal by teaching Ambrogio how to drink her blood and turn her into a vampire queen. This was the beginning of vampires in Greek mythology and also the beginning of Selene as the moon goddess.

Temple
I am a temple made for a holy spirit,
a vase filled with many dreams
that pour out like water
to form the mist upon my wings.

Space Goddess
Shooting stars orbit those crystal souls a gold heart, glowing aura angel goddess cosmic tides rushing heat lava over coal diamond indigo children alien abductions locked minds, strange celestial emotions
tragic memory white metal key seductions lost in our outer space spirit misplaced planetary alignment comets crosses faith
prisms bows raindrop rebels tears erased terrible emotions dreams without purpose revelations, salutations, sky vibrations
spiritual purpose star map magic serpent don’t give up the humanity of our touches hands together clasped forever in prayer Gods design fingers entwine his clutches.

Seraphim
Love is my hunter
My eyes fill up with the sea
Wings cover my face.

Cranes At Costa Rica Shipping Port Still Not Functioning

Costa Rica News – On August 29th we all saw the arrival of two Post-Panamax cranes to the port of Moín, Limón.

The press was there along with neighbors and multiple government authorities. The Port Administration and Economic Development Board of the Atlantic Coast (Japdeva) invited them.

The equipment left China on June 22. It is valued at $16 million and was purchased with the aim of increasing the number of containers that Japdeva moves per hour and thus increasing the entity’s revenues.

However, five months later the cranes are not being used due to electrical and mechanical problems. For every day they are not in use, the port entity loses out on $25,000 for loading and unloading of boats in Limón dock.

The supplier of the equipment has not been able to bring the spare parts from Spain because the failures coincided with Christmas. The contractor will solve the problem around the third week of February.
