Costa Rica News – Senasa, the Animal Welfare program of the National Animal Health Service, has found and seized 35 dogs in a deplorable state in a hatchery that is linked to one of the candidates for PUSC deputy, Shirley Díaz, on November 14th.
Some of the problems found include skin inflammations, ear infections, perforated eardrums, untreated glaucoma, smelly coats, rotten teeth and ulcers.
The farm and nursery that breeds the dogs is run by Shirley Díaz’ husband, Eddy Jiménez González. They deny the animals suffered the evils described by Senasa. Rodolfo Piza asks to investigate the candidate after all this.
Prices for the dogs, which are small breeds like shih tzu, yorkie, maltese and chihuahua, are between ¢50,000 and ¢800,000. The family decided about a year ago to gradually close the business, which is no longer profitable.
The confiscated animals remain under the care of Senasa. They will be sterilized and given for adoption.
The animals left on the farm must be cared for to the standards Senasa requires within 30 days or they will also be confiscated.
