Autistic Child Wonders the Streets of Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – PANI has intervened on behalf of a three year old child with autism, deciding to place him in the care of a family member, perhaps his godmother, while investigations into his original care are ongoing.

The case came to their attention when the boy was missing for 17 hours between Saturday and Sunday.

The entity reported that certain risk factors were found that must be analyzed in depth.

Thiago appears to have escaped from his parents’ house and wandered for 17 hours through rough roads and underbrush before being found in Santiago de Paraíso, Cartago.

There is doubt, however, as to how he wandered so far, three kilometers, and how he survived the cold of the night, 15 degrees Celsius. His father thinks someone picked him up and took him there. The OIJ will investigate.

The child is still in the care of the National Children’s Hospital where he is being observed. He was brought there by the Patrol of the Air Surveillance Service of the Ministry of Public Security.
