Volcano Tenorio Awakening in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – Scientists are wondering if the Tenorio volcano is awakening.

There has been high seismic activity, alerting them to the possibility of the shakes being linked to movement of volcanic fluids.

The volcano had hundreds of years of eruptions and lava flows before entering a stage of inactivity and then being considered dormant. Scientists from the National Seismological Network and University of Costa Rica have been investigating because, since 2002, there has been seismicity in the surrounding area with unknown origin.

There are six seismic faults near the volcano. It was thought that they caused the shakes but since January 9th of this year there has been much greater activity, 505 events of varying magnitude, considered a seismic swarm.

This includes five tremors with magnitudes between 4.5 and 5 degrees.

More research is required to see if we are facing the Tenorio awakening. Recently, nine temporary stations were added to improve the control of tectonic monitoring and the evolution of seismic swarms.
