Medical School Accreditation in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – The various schools of medicine in Costa Rica must all achieve international endorsement if they want to send students abroad to practice or pursue advanced studies.

The accreditation will allow students to specialize or subspecialize abroad, including in Canada and the United States. Costa Rica has 1 public university and 6 private ones offering medical studies.

They have until 2023 to achieve accreditation from the World Federation for Medical Education.

Obtaining this includes presenting documents and tests guaranteeing the students’ abilities. Ucimed hopes to complete the process earlier, by 2021.

The National System of Accreditation of Higher Education is exploring whether it can become an international accrediting agency so that the process can be done without looking for external entities. The process could cost between $50,000 and $70,000.
