Inexpensive Day Trips During Vacations in Costa Rica

The end of year school vacation is about half-way through. It’s that time when kids start getting antsy and parents wonder how they can occupy the kids on a low budget. We bring you a number of ideas below.

We are fortunate to live in a country that so many pay thousands of dollars to visit on vacation. We get to travel to these beautiful spots just a few hours from home for the cost of a bus ticket and entrance fee which is usually significantly lower for nationals than foreigners.

La Cangreja national park in Puriscal has three paths to travel, including one that is flat and therefore better for those with disabilities. While traveling the paths, you can bird watch, pass rivers and waterfalls, and see 44 species of plants endemic to the country. The entrance is just ₡1,000.

The Caribbean Botanical Garden features six types of gardens (orchid, tropical, vanilla, Thai, Japanese, and aquatic plants) as well as a butterfly trail. It’s just ₡3,500 to enter.

Parque Ambiental Municipal Río Loro boasts hiking trails with 140 bird species as well as armadillos, coyotes, and other mammals. There’s also a butterfly garden and a serpentarium. Picnic and playground areas are available too. The entrance is just ₡1,000.

The Pacific Marine Park has about 50 species of marine and coastal animals. There is an aquarium where you can see clown fish, seahorses, sharks, turtles and more up close. Admission is ₡2,900.

The Llanos del Cortés waterfall and eco-touristic project in Guanacaste contains a 25 meter high waterfall to enjoy. There is a lifeguard on duty for the safety of visitors.
