Careers Just for Men in Costa Rica?

Statistics show that women finish school more often than men in Costa Rica, yet 40% of people surveyed did not think this was true. Additionally, 4 out of 10 surveyed individuals believed that there are certain careers for men only.

The National Survey of Perception of Human Rights of Women in Costa Rica was made as part of the III State of the Human Rights of Women in Costa Rica. The National Institute of Women and the School of Statistics of the University of Costa Rica were involved.

1,101 people over age 18 were surveyed in rural and urban areas between April 1 and May 1. Another finding was that 33.6% agreed that there are some careers considered feminine or only for women.

Even though women are more successful educationally their perception and labor insertion are still affected by gender stereotypes. 72.8% agreed that by nature, women are better at listening, caring and helping other people and 34.8% believed men are better at building, solving problems and directing.
