Murder Plot to Kill “Gringo”

Seven men carried out a plan to kill Erwin Guido Toruño, known as “Gringo,” a narco leader. Some of them are already in prison for other crimes and others were arrested by the OIJ police following an investigation that included 15 raids.

The murder happened in December 2017. It seems that Luis Ángel Martínez Fajardo orchestrated the execution from a Nicaraguan jail where he is serving a sentence. He gave instructions to his right-hand man, José Garbanzo Rodríguez, who transmitted them to the rest of the group. They tortured and killed Gringo in a Mazda 6, stabbing him 136 times. A video showed the violent homicide.

Three suspects were arrested on Tuesday. It seems that two of the suspects planned the crime and the other five executed it. Gringo’s rival paid ¢100 million for his death. Former soccer player Alexánder Rodríguez Araya is a suspect for allegedly having agreed to deliver Gringo for the reward. There are three more people linked to the crime who have not been arrested as well as Geidy Mauricio Soto Cascante who was murdered in March.
