The lagoon of the Irazú volcano may dry up this month, according to scientists and park rangers. The estimates are based on how much the level has been falling and that the coming months are expected to be drier.
In 2013 it dried up and remained dry for 4 years. The lagoon is important because it captures gases and fluids that scientists can then analyze to see what’s going on inside the volcano. It is also a shock absorber in the case of an eruption.
The lagoon has changed a lot. In 2001 it was 30 meters deep. It was never that deep again because of the constant fall of materials from the north wall as well as deterioration and cracks. In 2017, when it reappeared, it was 12 meters deep.
This volcano is the highest in the country. It had 38,000 visitors in January alone. When the weather is clear, visitors can see for several kilometers. The entrance fee is ₡1,000 for nationals and $15 for foreigners.
