INS Car Insurance Coverage in Costa Rica

There will be some changes made to the voluntary insurance offered by INS, though the price will remain the same. Among the significant changes, INS will purchase the needed parts directly rather than having individual workshops make the purchases and submit invoices.

The insured will have the option of having the repair done at any workshop of their choosing but the original assessment will be done by INS. The parts needed will then be ordered. If the car is less than seven years old, new original parts will be used. For older cars, used original parts or new generics may be used.

This contractual variation does not change who can be insured nor the price charged. Clients will only see changes should they need to use the policy following an accident. The changes will apply to all current and new clients.

INS officials hope to motivate more people to use the Declaration of Minor Accident Form by exonerating the amount compensated. This form is for anyone who has any voluntary insurance. It is to be used in crashes that only have material damage and no visible injuries or mortalities. The involved agree on their responsibilities in this document and it is valid before Traffic Court. This avoids the need to call Traffic Police and allows traffic jams to clear up quicker.
