Costa Rica News – A drone camera gave a closeup view into the crater of the Turrialba volcano. The mouth of the volcano is 1.5 times the building of the National Bank. The width is a little larger than the National Stadium.
The camera showed conduits with magma about 250 meters deep.
The information is from Volcanes sin Fronteras, which did several recent inspections with the drone.
The report indicated that current activity is dominated by intense degassing in the active crater, with sporadic explosions, which occur approximately every hour. These emanations reach about 300 meters.
Their findings indicate that the source of heat and pressure is close to the surface and could generate larger eruptions soon. Stronger explosions than those in recent days can be expected.
The volcano had 146 years of calm and then its first major eruption in 2010. In 2014 it erupted for 13 hours at one point. We are now seeing annual eruptions with intervals of 2 to 3 months of calm.
On January 15th, Turrialba erupted for 30 minutes. The waste reached a distance of 12 kilometers from the crater. Lava was not seen due to poor weather.
