Wisconsin Man Tortured on Vacation in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – A Wisconsin man is alive but suffering serious injuries after he was beaten, stabbed and tortured while on vacation.

It seemed that Ryan Messerschmidt was having a dream vacation in Costa Rica until his family said someone took him and tortured him.

The father of a 7-month-old from River Falls was traveling by himself.

His cousins, Liebe and Trica Luhring, said someone targeted him at the airport and at a resort.

After they didn’t hear from him, his family reported him missing.

Their next communication was from police, who sent his sister horrifying photos.

“She was sent three photos in the back of a pickup truck. His skin is covered in gashes and mud. His skin looks blue. He’s unconscious, stripped, stripped naked. And you can’t tell if he’s alive or dead,” Liebe said.

“It’s scary, really scary to know that’s somebody you love … How could somebody do that?” Luhring said.

The family found out Tuesday that Costa Rican police and U.S. embassy officials found him alive, but in bad shape.

They don’t know who attacked their cousin or why. He’s now at a hospital in Costa Rica but told family he still feels in danger.

“He told my cousin — his sister — that he was tied up, beaten stabbed and tortured. For what end? I have no idea. None of it makes any sense,” Liebe said.

His cousins said his sister is working with the U.S. embassy and will travel to Costa Rica to bring Messerschmidt back to the United States.
