Does Costa Rica’s Plastic Law Hold Any Weight?

President Carlos Alvarado and many environmentalists are not happy with the law to reduce plastic. They believe it is still insufficient and should be made much stricter to have a greater impact.

The bill was approved in the second debate. It prohibits the commercialization and free delivery of plastic straws. The President expressed on his Twitter account that it is not enough and that the country should aim for eliminating single-use plastics altogether. “The planet and the new generations demand it,” he said.

The political advocacy manager of MarViva believes it is a step in the right direction but that it falls short of what is needed and what other countries are doing to counter plastic pollution.

The industrial sector, on the other hand, is overwhelmed by the changes. Companies will have to either change drastically to meet new standards or end their business. They have to evolve or disappear.
