Organ Waiting List Causing Deaths in Costa Rica

Sick people are dying because they are in need of organs and the problem isn’t a lack of organs rather that those available are being wasted. This year, 21 people died waiting for a kidney.

The CCSS is unorganized in the matter. There is a problem with the pay scheme for those involved in the explant surgeries. They are asked to do them voluntarily, which some people do not want to do and others are not available in the moment they receive the call. If just one person on the team can’t get to the hospital the surgery is not done and the organs are wasted.

Another problem is organ rejection. Ideally, each cadaveric donor can provide 10 to 15 organs but of the nine donors generated in the last three months, only twelve organs have been transplanted.

The Ministry of Health has issued a health order to the CCSS giving it 20 business days to organize the chaos of the national transplant network crisis that has been ongoing since 2015.
