How’d You Like to Drive a Bus in Costa Rica 19 Hours a Day?

The company that runs bus services in la Uruca was found to have forced drivers to work up to 19 hours a day. The Ministry of Labor gives Biusa until November 20 to correct this violation of the Labor Code.

If the company does not make changes it will be exposed to a judicial process. The next investigation is already scheduled. In the first investigation the abnormalities were found by interviewing staff and checking payroll.

The law stipulates that a worker can not work more than 12 hours a day including overtime. Overtime must be paid 50% more than regular hours. The drivers started at 4 am and had uncertain departure times, sometimes 19 hours later.

The company has been in trouble before. It lost permission to provide services at one point because the owner had stopped services without authorization in order to pressure Aresep to increase the bus fare.
