Electric Bike Program in Costa Rica Going Well

There are already 25,000 OMNiBicis users. The application allows users to unlock bicycles with electric motors. They can be rented for an hour or even for days, months or the whole year.

7,500 trips have been completed on the pedal assisted bikes. Each of the 500 bikes has already been used. They have to be returned every night, however, to be recharged. There are 17 designated parking points enabled.

Some users did not understand how the service works and took the bikes home with them. They have GPS trackers so it was easy in most cases to go to the homes and explain the service and get the bikes back without trouble. In a few cases, however, people did not want to return the bikes and the authorities had to be called.

The bike rentals cost ₡600 per hour, ₡11,300 monthly, and ₡67,800 annually. There will be 1,000 bikes available by the end of the year. The app can be downloaded in the Apple AppStore or the Google Play store.
