Costa Rica COVID Update

Costa Rica’s been combating covid-19 for four months now. With seven deaths this month alone and four in under 24 hours, the pandemic is becoming even more concerning. All the while, some people ignore the sanitary measures put forth by authorities.

On Friday and Saturday, the 9-1-1 system had 1,300 calls reporting crowds, parties, or liquor consumption. When the Public Force responded to one call, they were met by a drunk man with a machete in hand. Searches are permitted in cases with a health situation. Fines may be given out when there is a breach of sanitary orders.

In total, since the start, there have been 5,241 covid-19 cases accumulated. This is double what the figure was just two weeks ago. Both the hospitalization and death toll rates have been increasing significantly. There have been 23 deaths. 10 women and 13 men, between the ages of 26 and 92, have lost their lives. 88 patients are in the hospital including nine in the ICU.

The Health Minister, Daniel Salas, reminded us of the humanity of the situation. He urged us not to get used to seeing numbers rather to remember that each of them represents a person with a family suffering.
