Two brothers from Jamaica, ages 48 and 51, set up a call center in Costa Rica that was used to scam senior citizens out of $350,000. Both had an international arrest warrants from the International Police, Interpol, and were arrested by the OIJ.
The arrests were made by the OIJ in Ciudad Colon and Alajuela on Saturday morning at 8:50 am and 10 am. In addition to the arrests, a nine-millimeter firearm and ammunition were seized.
The crime they are suspected of is fraud with an estimated economic damage of $350,000. The call center used software that made it seem they were calling from Washington D.C. They called U.S. citizens, mostly seniors, and told them they had won a prize but would need to deposit money to cover the insurance of the prize money, which was of course never received.
After the arrests, the men were placed under the orders of the San Jose Criminal Court since they are sought after by the United States Government.
