The Poás Volcano has been closed for a few days and should reopen soon. The closure was a safety precaution as it, on Friday, launched a rare volcanic foam that is being studied, undergoing chemical analysis.
The foam was spread over the viewpoint, parking lot and bathrooms. It is a material that has never before been seen in any part of the country. It has a drool-like consistency, is high is salt and chloride and is highly acidic and corrosive.
The saline rich foam was seen again on Saturday. Then there was an eruption on Sunday of ash, water, steam and gas that smelled of sulfur. This is normal activity of the volcano. Experts are keeping an eye out for any changes in the volcanic action.
Acidic material is dangerous to people because it can cause coughing and other respiratory issues. It can also cause skin allergies, eye irritation and fade clothing. The volcano will reopen when safe.
