Costa Rica News – Foam was found in the Poás Volcano National Park leading many to question what is volcanic foam? An expert explains that the term volcanic foam is actually incorrect as the foam doesn’t come out of the volcano.
The foam is caused when acid mixes with rain as well as when the acid rain mixes with concrete in soils and structures. On Friday and Saturday, there was a highly acidic rain that turned into this rare foam that caught the attention of the park rangers and later volcanology experts.
A scientist described the foam as rare, hyperacidic, hypersaline and with a strong chlorine odor. A member of the Costa Rican Volcanological and Seismological Observatory argued the phenomenon is normal considering the increase in activity of the volcano.
There is a near constant emanation of acid when the magma inside a volcano is near the surface. Due to recent activity, a new mouth opened at the bottom of the crater with more heat coming out.
