The Committee on Economic Affairs of the Legislative Assembly announced on Wednesday an alternative text for the Government’s new plan to regulate Uber and other technological platforms.
The text puts the user at the forefront and safety as most important. It creates a right of operation each driver will have to pay and obliges companies to register as employers and pay taxes.
It sees the issue mainly as an employment situation. There needs to be a healthy balance with those who provide transport services. It includes the possibility of limiting the amount of time each driver can stay connected.
The user protection system includes requiring drivers to provide receipts with the cost, route travelled, license plate, type of vehicle, and full name and photo of the accredited driver.
It aims to make things easier for taxi drivers too. It would allow the use of cars over eight years old and change two annual technical reviews to just one per year. It would also allow them to agree on more competitive rates with the user.
