Costa Rica’s Amazing Cyclist María José Vargas

Costa Rica’s María José Vargas signed her first professional cycling contract when she was 21, two years ago. It was something the young woman from Miramar in Puntarenas dreamed of as a teenager.

She can now be considered a professional cyclist. She has won medal after medal, moved to Mexico to train with the Swapit-Agolico Cycling Pro Team, a first-line group, competed in World Tour races and is now looking forward to the Olympics.

She participated in the Managua 2017 Central American Games taking home the gold medal for Costa Rica. That was her first step on the Olympic cycle. She then went to the Central American and Caribbean Barranquilla 2018 and took sixth place.

She doesn’t believe it was good luck that got her to where she is as she accredits it more to the hard work she put in. She has an incredibly strong confidence and discipline and love for the sport.
