Watch Out for Costa Rican Waiters Stealing Your Credit Card Info

A young waitress who worked at a restaurant in Alajuela took photos of bank cards in order to steal information from them to use later. The accused is a 21-year-old girl who participated in beauty pageants.

She is without a previous record but now accused of at least four crimes of stealing credit or debit card information from clients who gave their cards over to pay for a meal at the restaurant.

The OIJ received information from a bank which noticed odd charges on the four cards. The clients who the cards belong to denied having made the charges over the Internet. The total charges are ₡1.7 million.

Cell phones, vouchers with electronic and financial transactions, and cash have been seized for the investigation. There is a second suspect allegedly involved in at least one of the four counts of fraud, under the modality of cloning cards.
