Costa Rica News – 109 people line up in the TSE for a gender and name change on their ID cards. Additionally, seven same-sex couples applied to register their marriages and another to register their common law marriage.
This is after Costa Rica decided to comply with the advisory opinion the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, regarding LGTBI rights, although it has not yet figured out all of the details of how to do so. Still, there is already a waiting list to take advantage of these great changes.
A group was formed after seeing the criterion the Court issued on January 9, ordering the country to recognize the rights of the LGTBI community. The Court ordered that all 20 countries under its jurisdiction guarantee to same-sex couples all existing rights for heterosexual couples. The commission will propose measures to comply with the ruling, such as changes in protocols, procedures and regulations. The recommendations would be issued once the electoral process is completed, on April 13.
It also insists on the right to change documents to one’s “self-perceived gender identity.” This can now be done without requirements such as medical or psychological certifications. Additionally this must be confidential with no note in the records as to previous name or identity.
