Costa Rica News – There are finally plans to build the El Diquís plant in Costa Rica.
It will cost $3,694 million and will be ready in 2030. It will serve as a “backup battery” for the Central American region.
This hydroelectric project by ICE will be build on the Térraba River in Buenos Aires of Puntarenas. The project has seen seven years of project paralysis and a total of 20 years since its inception.
The installed capacity will be double that of the Reventazón plant. It is not necessary yet for demand in the country but will be important in the future for internal energy as well as for a backup to the Central American electrical system. It will integrate renewable sources.
Before initiating any work a consultation and resolution is needed because the plant would require the use of indigenous territory that is protected under law. The indigenous group has a right to be consulted on any issue that affects their territory.
