Costa Rica Upping Salaries in Public Sector by About $15 a Year

Public sector workers will benefit from an agreement signed by the government and the union sector on Tuesday. 125,000 civil service officials will have a single increase of ₡7,500 next year.

The proposal came from the Minister of Labor as a way to reduce the wage gaps between sectors and impact the economy and families in a positive way. The Wages Commission signed the decree. This will be the only increase the public sector will have in 2020.

In addition to the general increase, there is a differentiated one for those with lower wages. Those who make ₡300,000 or less will get the ₡7,500 plus ₡1,250. Those who make over ₡750,000 will not receive any increase.

The proposal was met positively by many involved parties. It was signed by the trade union sector, Rerum Novarum Confederation, the Central General of Workers, and the Costa Rican Workers’ Movement.
