What Are the New Abortion Laws in Costa Rica?

Many are still unclear about what to expect from the legislation regarding abortion. Some are against it entirely and others wish it was more open. The idea behind it is to allow abortion in circumstances where the woman’s life or health is at risk by the pregnancy.

Lawmakers are not ready to allow abortions to anyone who wants one so they have made a very thorough process that must be followed before any abortion is performed. The case first goes through a review of the criteria from OBGYN doctors who sign off on it as well as a signed consent from the woman. A doctor or patient can refuse based on their beliefs. A patient in danger who wants an abortion can go to another doctor who will perform the procedure.

The law will take effect in six months. This is a great relief to those who have been forced to carry to term a baby they knew wouldn’t survive, those who have opted for illegal abortions to protect their health, and the families of those who were lost because of forced pregnancy that took their lives.

Some of the conditions considered dangerous to the lives of women during pregnancies include heart and kidney diseases and ectopic pregnancies.
