Costa Rican Samady Fonseca Gets 25 Years in Prison

Samady Fonseca will spend 25 years in prison for being an intellectual author for the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Baker Gerardo Cruz Barquero. He was stabbed twice and died 42 days later, on November 19, 2015.

Fonseca’s daughter Kristina Valerin and two other perpetrators are going to spend 20 years in prison for qualified homicide. A fifth defendant who was a minor at the time will serve 7 years of internment in a penal center. A sixth defendant was not charged.

The original penalties were longer sentences but they were reduced, shocking many. The reason for reducing them was that the files showed circumstances that allowed a reduction, for instance, Fonseca showed regret and yielded her right to defense as to not re-victimize the mother of Gerardo Cruz.

The mother of the victim made a statement thanking the Public Ministry and the Office of Civil Defense of the Victim for support shown throughout the four-year process. She is thankful Gerardo can now rest in peace with the justice that has been done.
