Fake News! Coronavirus in Costa Rica

An official from San Juan de Dios leaked false information, by sharing a photo of a patient’s lab test and audios from staff, creating panic that the coronavirus Covid-19 had entered the country.

The health chief sent an official notice to the executive president of the Caja to alert him to the leak of information and the inaccuracy of it. He referred to this as a very serious offense which must be disciplined.

The Ministry of Health and the Costa Rican Social Security Fund quickly denied the information that was causing undue panic countrywide. The authorities also assured that there are already protocols in place in case a real case of Covid-19 arises.

The public is urged to continue taking normal precautions such as hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes. Avoid mass events and school or work if you have any respiratory symptoms, no matter their origin.
